CLIENT STORY

Restructuring a Law Partnership to Cut Tax Nearly in Half

A mid-sized North Vancouver law partnership was reporting substantial personal income each year losing roughly 44% of it to tax. The partners knew something needed to change, but worried the fix would be too complex to be worth it.

We proposed splitting the partnership into three corporations: one main corporation and a professional corporation for each partner, with profits divided so only salaries were drawn personally and remaining profit stayed at the small business tax rate.

In the first year under the new structure, each partner paid almost 50% less in tax than the year before.

FAQ

Corporate Tax & Assurance Questions We Get Often

Should I incorporate my business?

It depends on your income level, growth plans and risk exposure. Incorporation can significantly reduce your tax rate at certain income levels, but it adds cost and complexity. We walk through the numbers with you before you decide.

What's the difference between a review engagement and an audit?

A review engagement provides limited assurance based on analysis and inquiry. An audit provides a higher level of assurance through more extensive testing and verification. Lenders and investors often specify which one they require.

Do I need audited or reviewed financial statements for a business loan?

Many lenders require at least a review engagement, and some require a full audit, depending on the size of the loan and the lender's policy. We can tell you which level applies before you apply.

How much does corporate tax preparation cost?

It depends on your corporation's size, transaction volume, and whether financial statements or assurance work are also required.
